The series
Every perfect country has a price. One man is keeping the account.
A former keeper of accounts is carried, without warning or consent, from one country to the next. Every one of them should not exist.
Each was founded after a catastrophe, on one humane promise. No one will be treated arbitrarily. No one will suffer alone. No one will be punished for an honest mistake. No one will be broken by bad news. Most of us would sign every one. And each country keeps its promise past the point where keeping it begins to cost, then charges that cost to someone who cannot refuse.
The scales cannot weigh him. The census cannot describe him. The courts enter his silence as evidence. Every country must decide what he is, and he must decide what he owes it, before the ground gives way and carries him on.
Twenty countries across five books. A love story told in wound clocks and rain gauges. A political education told in bread prices and border stamps. And a reckoning with the oldest question any society asks: when a rule is built to protect people, who pays for the people it was never built to see?
A Map of Other Laws is a complete five-book series of literary speculative fiction. All five books are out by New Year's Day 2027.
